Iris Hybridizing of the Past 50 Years Keith Keppel certainly needs no introduction to those of us who are fortunate enough to live in the Pacific Northwest. A graduate of Cal State Poly-Tech College with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture, he began a long line of success with his introductions. He spent his employment career with the U.S. Post Office. Much later, after he retired, he became a transplant to Oregon from California. He was a contributing writer for The World of Iris and many of his articles are found throughout the pages of the AIS Bulletin. Beginning in 1982 he was the editor for the AIS Bulletin and held that position for five years. Most know him for his detail-oriented position as registrar for American Iris Society that he also held for many years. Then there are his abundant awards. They include the Foster Memorial Plaque, the highest award of the British Iris Society; the Dykes Medal; the Distinguished Service Medal; and the Hybriduzers Medal. Along the way are numerous Awards of Merit and Honorable Mentions and trophies of all types and sizes. Keith is also the recipient of the AIS Gold Medal. This is the highest award of the American Iris Society and is given in recognition of dedicated service to the society. So with all that said, come and hear Keith speak about 50 Years of Hybridizing at our April meeting. By Tracy Plotner. (Some details and facts are borrowed form an earlier article written by Bennett Jones. Thank you Bennett.)
